Modes of thinking
The Two Modes of Thinking
Hey there, today I would like to talk about modes of thinking.
There are two main modes in which we think, focused mode and diffused mode. This can also be explained by explaining convergent and divergent thinking. Creative and abstract thinking goes hand in hand with divergent thinking and diffused mode, whereas analytical thinking and problem solving goes hand in hand with convergent thinking and focused mode.
The best way to utilize our brain is to switch between focused and diffused modes of thinking to solve problems. This way we can create a large number of possible solutions using diffused mode, and then narrow down on the solutions and execute using focused mode.
This also establishes the importance of the role played by the subconscious, inventors like Thomas Edison used to use alternate between working periods and rest periods to come up with creative inventions. This can be explained this way :
New synapses are formed when we rest after using our brain. We can use the analogy of a bodybuilder who lifts weights and rests to improve his body, similarly it helps to use our brain and then rest to improve our brain power.
